Signet Ring
Signet rings bear small seals or signets. Usually bearing a coat of arms that is
created through an engraving. The engraving may be done in gems, metal or another
kind of material. Signet rings are a part of the history of Egyptian culture. Ancient
Egyptian men wore cylindrical seals which served as signs of their authority. They
hung from their arms or necks. Egyptian women wore several signet rings on finger.
Signet rings in the Roman culture were made of different material and each material
showed definite social status of the person. Military or civil people had the right
to wear gold signet rings and the masses could wear only iron signet rings. Later
due to the changes in the Roman culture slaves were allowed to wear signet rings
made of iron, freed men wore silver signet rings and gold signet rings were available
for freeborn citizens. In European countries people began to wear signet rings
as a sign of a noble status.
Signet rings can be worn on little or ring finger on the right or left hand and
only in some cultures the position of the ring indicates the civil status of the
person. In certain countries signet rings are granted to the power of monarchial
members. Nowadays almost any university and college have its own signet ring's
